Product Overview
In the last decade or so, research has proven the astounding effects classical
music can have on our minds. Not only that, in the first years of human life,
the brain is essentially being "wired" and shaped by its environment.
A stimulating environment one that is rich with emotion, music, language,
etc. has a long-lasting and at least semi-permanent impact on a person's
entire life.
Don Campbell authored a definitive book entitled The Mozart Effect,
and this title has become somewhat of a catch-phrase to describe the power of
music in our lives. Campbell's book helps to correlate the music of Mozart with
an increased ability to learn, and improved health of body and spirit. Though
there have since been a number of attempts to disprove the theories behind the
Mozart Effect, few will deny that classical music sets a distinctive mood, helps
to inspire, and has powerful even transforming effects on its
listeners.
The music of Mozart can be described as highly organized, very inspiring,
and yet not as intense or emotional as the works of many other classical composers.
Mozart's violin concertos in particular with their high frequencies are very
stimulating.
With this series specifically designed for children, the music of Mozart is
organized into 3 categories for different moods, times of day, and intents:
- Volume 1: "Tune Up Your Mind" is especially designed to increase spatial,
verbal, and emotional intelligence. This volume features Mozart's Violin Concertos,
considered to be the most "nutritious" of Mozart's works for the
brain and body. The author suggests to use this volume at any time when improved
concentration and focus are desired, such as during homework time.
- Volume 2: "Relax, Daydream, & Draw" features specific works of Mozart that
will aid relaxation, slow the body down, and open up the mind. The author
suggests playing this volume on sleepy afternoons, during art time, or before
nap- or bedtime. The selections for this volume are gentle and soothing, and
will help the listener wind down.
- Volume 3: "Mozart in Motion" is an especially playful collection designed
to stimulate kids into action both physical and mental. The author
suggests using this volume to improve coordination, inspire right-brain (creative)
learning, and improve mood. The selections include marches and upbeat, motivating
tracks.
This collection is wonderfully organized and themed. It was well-received by young
listeners. Music can be used as a cue for children to either rest and drift off
to sleep, play, or enjoy some arts and crafts activities. For example, I introduced
Volume 2 to my own daughter as I pulled out paints, paper, markers, and other
art supplies. She happily created some pictures with the music playing in the
background. The next day when I put the same CD on, she took it as her cue to
make some more masterpieces. It is wonderful to have a carefully arranged CD that
helps define a mood, aids in getting kids to concentrate and focus, and serves
as pleasant background music.
I was somewhat skeptical at first, thinking that parents might only need to
play their own Mozart collections. Though kids will surely benefit from practically
any arrangement, these 3 CDs are superbly organized and provide an easy way
to create a desired atmosphere. Despite the distinct themes of these compilations,
each volume still manages to serve up a wonderful variety of musical experiences
and performances, including chamber orchestras, solo piano, etc.
