After a general introduction to science with the opening song Science Is, children are treated to 30 more kid-friendly, facts-packed science songs. Some of these are familiar children's tunes with fresh lyrics. Home on the Sea, for example, is sung to the tune Home on the Range, but is all about marine invertebrates. This song paints a vibrant picture of sea life, offering children the chance to become familiar with creatures like sea anemones, arthropods, jellyfish, and crabs by listening to short descriptions of each all set to music, of course. Weights and Measures is sung to Alouette and teaches children what makes up a foot, yard, furlong, and mile, then moves on to ounces, quarts, and so forth.
Adding Up the Families
is a lively method of exposing children to numbers, adding, and terms for animal families, like pods, hives, schools, and flocks. Other songs teach children how to say 'yes' in a number of languages of the world, learn the names and characteristics of rivers of the world, and expose them to common geography terms like peninsula, isthmus, reefs, and continents.
Lest this sounds like a science drill, it isn't. Many of the tunes call up wonderful pictures in the mind, such as Constellation Cowboy, which not only helps kids become comfortable with astronomy terms, but also gives them a big picture of the starry sky and the relative positions of the constellations through a cowboy's playful journey across the galaxy. After hearing Planet Jive a few times, children will be on familiar terms with the main characteristics of the planets and will know their order in space.
